The COVID-19 proliferated as a pandemic with a widespread panic across the world. During the first wave millions of people came under its influence while the high-altitude regions were largely untouched. However, the second wave was effective enough to make its way to these areas as well. Because of that, the people of the Himalayan villages were showing COVID-19 symptoms but had no awareness of the virus, how to treat it or social distancing norms.
When the virus spread in these areas and people got sick, remoteness became one of the biggest hurdles. Many patients couldn’t get immediate help leading to deaths and the spread of the pandemic. Due to no road connectivity, limited network access, no isolation centers, and lack of awareness, it became hard for villagers to recover.
Sensing the urgency of the situation, Trek The Himalayas launched a project – Save Himalayan Villages from COVID -19 – an initiative to ensure the locals are prepared well to cope with the threat imposed by the Corona virus disease. The project also aimed to prepare them well in advance for the third wave.
We provided immediate medical relief by setting up a team that started working on the ground straight away. We arranged 4000 medical kits with safety instructions pamphlets and headed to Lohajung and villages nearby (Mundoli, Baank, Kuling, Wan) of Chamoli district. Gradually, we expanded the campaign to 23 more villages of Uttarkashi, including Barsu, Raithal, Natin, Jakhol, Sankri, etc.
As part of our fight against Corona virus, we donated medical kits with oximeters, RTPCR test kits, thermometers, basic medicines, masks and sanitizers. We worked closely with Asha Workers and local volunteers and shared knowledge regarding how to deal with positive cases. We also coordinated with government officials and Gram Pradhans to build quarantine centers for COVID patients.
Due to our sincere efforts, this initiative was widely appreciated that led to invitations from other villages as well. So the places we went were as far as the last village, Mana. Here is what we were able to achieve at the end of this project:
